Board Management, External Relations and Expansion

The President of ELSA the Netherlands is looking for the following Officers:

Director for Acquisitions

Responsible NB member: President

Term: From appointment – 31 of July 2023

Description:
The Director for Acquisitions will work directly with the President and assist him in the acquisition of new partners and sponsors. This will involve, inter alia, drafting an acquisitions strategy, developing a partnership booklet, and approaching and participating in meetings with potential partners. This role will also involve close collaboration with the Vice President in charge of Marketing.

Tasks:

  • Co-drafting an acquisitions strategy;
  • Approaching potential partners;
  • Liaising with partners on the President’s behalf;
  • Regularly updating the President on the status of acquisitions within the Dutch Network;
  • Conducting due diligence as to whether an organisation is already partnered with a Local Group/National Group/ELSA International and double-checking that all acquisitions-related activities are conducted in compliance with the Decision Book of the International Board of ELSA;
  • Assisting in the creation of a partnership booklet as well as sponsorship packages;
  • Collaborating with the Vice President in charge of Marketing or their Directors to facilitate the creation of acquisitions-related materials.

Requirements:

  • Excellent command of written and spoken English; fluency in Dutch is highly preferred due to many potential partners operating in Dutch;
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in high-pressure team environments;
  • Excellent time management skills;
  • A good knowledge of the workings of ELSA; familiarity with the external relations pillar, and having ideas on how to implement it at the national level;
  • Prior experience in managing partnerships or approaching external partners is an asset.

Workload:

Director for Strategic Planning and Advocacy

Description:
The Director for Strategic Planning will work with the President and assist in creating a Strategic Plan for ELSA the Netherlands, as well as exploring how ELSA’s Strategic Goals can best be implemented in the Dutch Network. Furthermore, they will look into what topics are important to the Network for advocacy purposes and assist the President in developing advocacy projects.

Tasks:

  • Brainstorming a strategic plan that ensures a sustainable association;
  • Drafting ELSA the Netherlands’ Strategic Plan with the President and gather the input of Local Groups in the process;
  • Conduct a Network-wide survey on what matters our Local Groups think ELSA NL should focus on;
  • Develop and coordinate national-level advocacy projects;
  • Regularly update the President on progress that has been made.

Requirements:

  • Strong command of written and spoken English; 
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in high-pressure team environments;

Internal Management

The Secretary General of ELSA the Netherlands is looking for the following Officers:

Director for Welfare

Responsible NB member: Secretary General

Term: NCM I 2022 – NCM I 2023

Description:
The Director for Welfare is responsible for improving the welfare of our members. He or she will work closely with the Secretary General in analysing the welfare situation in our Network and proposing frameworks to improve this. Next to this, the Director for Welfare is the chair of the Conduct Committee of ELSA the Netherlands. This committee is responsible for enforcing the code of conduct within ELSA the Netherlands.

Tasks:

  • Improving Welfare within ELSA the Netherlands;
  • Creation of Welfare frameworks;
  • Chairing the Conduct Committee;
  • Investigating reports about the Code of Conduct;
  • Informing the National Board about potential risks;
  • Giving the Local Groups recommendations on request, or out of own initiative.

Requirements:

  • Strong command of English and Dutch language;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Excellent time management skills;
  • Experience in the IM area of ELSA is a pre.

This position is not open to Board members, Directors/Assistants or committee members of the National Board or Local Groups that are a Member of ELSA the Netherlands, this due to the impartiality of the position.

Director for Regulations

Responsible NB member: Secretary General

Description:
The Director for Regulations will work closely with the Secretary General in helping the  National Group and Local Groups with complying with internal and external regulations. The Director for Regulations will be responsible for drafting frameworks in which new legislation will be explained and making recommendations on how to comply with them. The Director for Regulations will also work closely with the Secretary General in improving the Internal Regulations.

Tasks:

  • Supporting the National Group with complying to regulations;
  • Supporting the Local Groups with complying to regulations;
  • Drafting of frameworks in which new legislation will be explained;

Assistant for Internal Regulations

Academic Activities

The Vice President in charge of Academic Activities of ELSA the Netherlands is looking for the following Officers:

Director for Rule of Law Education Campaign

Responsible NB member: Vice President in charge of Academic Activities

Term: From appointment – 31 July 2023

Description:

The ROLE campaign seeks to educate young students about the Rule of Law. This is done by training trainers who will then visit high schools around the Netherlands to present some pre-prepared Rule of Law materials. The ROLE Director is responsible for supervising and helping manage the ROLE campaign, including keeping in touch with third parties and talking with ROLE trainers. The candidate should preferably be a Dutch-speaker, in order to aid the VP AA where language barriers may be an obstacle. 

Tasks:

  • Help with ROLE Operational Plan;
  • Approach high schools around the Netherlands;
  • Approach students and young lawyers to act as trainers;
  • Approach NGOs and/or law firms;
  • Commit to being present in meetings and in the execution of the ROLE campaign for co-moderation and support.

Requirements:

  • English and Dutch speaking and writing skills;
  • Good communication and organisational skills;
  • Excellent time-management skills;
  • Knowledge of the ROLE campaign is preferred, but not a strict requirement.

Workload:
Daily commitment to the ROLE campaign is expected. The job does not necessarily suggest  working for many long hours, but it is important to be available on a daily basis due to unexpected obstacles along the way. Workload might increase in the execution of the campaign, likely to take place in February/March, when the trainers will go to the schools.

Director for Social Responsibility

Responsible NB member: Vice President in charge of Academic Activities

Description:

The Director for Social Responsibility will be responsible for co-managing the Social Responsibility Campaign alongside the VP AA.

Tasks:

  • Help with the Social Responsibility Campaign Operational Plan;
  • Propose topics and ideas for the campaign;
  • Oversee all initiatives under the campaign;
  • Contact third parties for the execution of the campaign.

Requirements:

  • Good communication and public speaking skills;
  • Excellent organisational skills;
  • High level of creativity;
  • Knowledge of the meaning of social responsibility and what the topic entails;
  • Knowledge of social responsibility pillar in AA is preferred.

Workload:
Commitment throughout the whole academic year is expected. Workload may vary on a monthly basis, but will consistently demand the Director to devote his/her time to organising an initiative related to the campaign approximately once a month.

Director for Law Review

Responsible NB member: Vice President in charge of Academic Activities

Term: From appointment – 31 July 2023

Description:

The Director for the Law Review will be responsible for helping the VP AA manage the law review, including: finding a new publishing house, and coordinating the editorial and academic board. This person will also be in charge of our Essay Competition.

Tasks:

  • Managing law review;
  • Finding new publishing house for the law review;
  • Coordinate the editorial and academic board;
  • Communicate with third parties;
  • Co-organise the essay competition alongside VP AA;
  • Co-manage the ELSA co-authorship initiative.

Requirements:

  • Good technical and communication skills;
  • Good time-management skills;
  • Experience in legal writing;
  • Experience in working in a law review.

Workload:
Workload may vary during the year, but full commitment and hard work is expected throughout the full academic year. Work needs to be put in almost every day, as it is important for the Director in charge of the Law Review to be on top of emails and ensure that the Law Review is getting quality submissions.

Editorial Board

Responsible NB member: Vice President in charge of Academic Activities

Term: From appointment – 31 July 2023

Description:

The Editorial Board is responsible for reviewing/editing submissions and is in charge of determining the policy of the Law Review. The Board will also be in charge of opening calls for submissions and selecting which submissions shall be published in the law review.

Tasks:

  • Linguistic and technical editing of submissions;
  • Determine the policy of the Law Review, including the submission criteria and the scope for the topics implemented;
  • Open call for submissions;
  • Selection of submissions which qualify for publication in the Law Review (which will then be peer-reviewed by the Academic Board).

Requirements:

  • Excellent command of English language skills
  • Experience in a Law Review
  • Interest and experience in legal writing 

Workload:
Workload may vary throughout the year. The most demanding time will be when submissions start coming in, where the Editorial Board will have to look over the submitted papers. Full commitment to the job means being available to work on the editing of submissions once they start coming in.

Competitions

Description:

The area of Competitions is developing significantly in the Network, with projects such as the ELSA Negotiation Competition, the National Moot Court Competition and with a view to organise the first BENELUX Moot Court Competition. The Director for Competitions will be responsible for coordinating the work of the Directors for the specific competitions and reporting back to the VP Competitiosn. Further tasks include aiding the VP Competitions in finding partners and sponsors, providing workshops, and more.

  • Assisting to organise competitions, i.e. to find/write venues, cases, rules;

  • Brainstorm ideas;
  • Provide support to other Directors;

The ELSA Negotiation Competition (ENC) involves two teams negotiating a fictitious case before a jury of legal professionals. It is structured on two levels: The Local Rounds and the National Round. As Director for the ELSA Negotiation Competition, you will be in charge of coordinating all aspects that factor into the organisation, focusing primarily on the national round. These include logistics, administration, financing, managing participants and judges, and many more. This position offers project management skills, networking opportunities and a greater understanding of company law.

Director for BENELUX Moot Court Competition

Description:

The ELSA Benelux Moot Court Competition is a transnational moot court competition in collaboration with ELSA Belgium and ELSA Luxemburg. This year marks the first edition of the competition. As Director for ELSA Benelux Moot Court Competition, you will be in charge of coordinating all aspects that factor into the organization of a Moot Court. These include drafting the rules and case, logistics, financing, participant and judges management, and many more tasks. Moreover, you will collaborate with ELSA Belgium and ELSA Luxemburg on the creation of this new moot court competition.

Tasks:

  • Assisting to organise the first BENELUX Moot Court Competition, i.e. to find/write venues, cases, rules
  • Assisting to find partners and sponsors

Professional Development

The Vice President in charge of Professional Development of ELSA the Netherlands is looking for the following Officer:

Director for Traineeships

Responsible NB member: Vice President in charge of Professional Development

Term: From appointment – 31 July 2023

Description:

The Director for Traineeships will be responsible for working together with the Vice President for Professional Development (ELSA NL) in communicating with current traineeship providers (TSPs) in the Netherlands and searching for new traineeship opportunities for students. The director will have a vital role in ensuring a smooth application process during the two ELSA Traineeship (ET) cycles, including the possibility to assist during information sessions and application review.

Tasks:

  • Communicating with existing TSPs;
  • Searching for new TSPs;
  • Assist in traineeship application review;
  • Assist with information sessions on ETs;
  • Other tasks related to ETs.

Requirements:

  • Strong English language skills;
  • Excellent professional communication ability;
  • Previous experience in traineeship process;
  • Dutch language knowledge is not required but is helpful.

Workload:
Working times will vary during the year and will be greatest during the two traineeship cycles. At other points of the year, expected time per week ranges from 2-3 hours.

The assistant for Seminars and conferences will be responsible for assisting VP S&C with the planning of all kinds of events that fall under Seminars and Conferences. He or she will work closely with the VP S&C to come up with ideas for events such as lectures, panel discussions, seminars or conferences.

Tasks:

  • Research for venues, accommodation, institutions and every matter in that regard;
  • Participation in all the meetings for event planning;
  • Willing to fill in for the VP when needed, work as shadow for the VP;
  • Send emails to speakers, collaborators or anyone that is needed for the event planning.

Requirements:

  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Excellent time management skills;
  • Experience in event management is preferable;
